Kapiti police are warning Waikanae residents about a man pretending to offer hedge trimming who is likely looking for theft opportunities.
Senior Sergeant Alastair Macmillan said police had received complaints about a group of Somali men looking for business with no sign of a vehicle, tools or identification.
Earlier this month, police received a complaint about a man, described as Somali, with a slim build and short black hair behaving suspiciously when he visited a Linwood Dr address.
"It appeared he was casing the property, was told to leave and did," Macmillan said.
Later the same day, a man who is believed to be the same person, went on to a Sunshine Ave property and spoke with an occupant in the driveway.
After the man left, the occupant found her mobile phone had gone missing, Mr Macmillan said.
Police warned Waikanae residents to contact the police if they were unsure about the identity of people touting for business or if they were behaving suspiciously.
