Kapiti police are searching for a man trying to use a stolen ID card to get money from a string of banks.
Constable Nathan Dickey said the man first entered the Paraparaumu ANZ bank at Coastlands Mall at 11.40am this morning and presented the teller with a fraudulent driver's licence.
''We're trying to identify this guy. He's gone into the bank and presented a stolen driver's licence.
''When the ANZ staff became suspicious they asked him to sign something, which he kept avoiding. Then his phone rung and he left the store.''
It appeared the card was not only stolen, but it had been ''modified'' as well, Mr Dickey said.
''The staff did really well to catch on to his behaviour. They started asking him questions, which got him off his stride and he left.''
Since leaving ANZ, he had also attempted to get money from ANZ Waikanae and Kiwi Bank Waikanae - also without success.
The owner of the driver's licence had not been aware it was missing until phoned by ANZ staff, Mr Dickey said.
Anyone who recognises the man at the bank can contact Mr Dickey at Kapiti police on 04 212 5226 or anonymously call the Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
