LATEST: A man is dead and a woman injured after a head-on crash on State Highway 1 near Paekakariki.
A train passenger called police after spotting the crash just north of the Fisherman's Table restaurant in Kapiti about 1pm Inspector Ken Climo, of police central communications, said.
''It's a fatal. It was two cars and it was a head-on.''
A Wellington Free Ambulance spokeswoman said the man, aged in his 20s, had died in the crash.
"A male in his late 20s was dead at the scene. A woman in her 50s has moderate head, face and chest injuries and she's been taken to Wellington Hospital."
Acting Senior Sergeant James McKay, on the scene, said it appeared the woman's vehicle had crossed the centre line, clipped another car, before hurtling head-on into the man's vehicle.
"Initially, it appears the northbound vehicle has crossed the centre line and hit one car. The northbound vehicle has continued across and hit another vehicle. The driver of the second southbound has died."
The first car that was hit was only "skimmed", he said. Its four passengers were not injured.
The police specialist crash team were analysing the crash and would be investigating if charges would follow.
Drivers should avoid travel by car if possible.
While traffic was being diverted along the Paekakariki Hill Rd, major delays could be expected.
The SH1 southbound lane was reopened at 3.40pm, and the northbound lane at 4pm, the NZTA spokesman said. However a bus was reported broken down in the northbound lane south of the accident site that would cause additional delays.
Drivers should expect slower travelling times on SH1 through the Kapiti Coast this evening as traffic slowly clears.
