Trailer of boats crashes on SH1
Traffic delays cleared after two hoursSAM BOYER AND TOM HUNT
After two hours of delays, State Highway 1 has been cleared at Plimmerton following a crash between a 4WD towing a trailer of rowing skiffs and a truck.
The crash happened about 12.30pm, a police spokesman said, causing both southbound lanes and one northbound lane north of Wellington to be closed.
''There's only one lane open and that's in the northbound lane," the spokesman said at the time. ''It's a car with trailer and [it] has hit a truck. There doesn't appear to be any injuries.''
Four police cars and the commercial crash investigators attended the scene.
Police said the delays had been exacerbated because a tow truck had struggled to get through the traffic to reach the accident.
A NZ Transport Agency spokesman said the road was eventually cleared just after 2pm. By 2.45pm, the Transport Agency declared the road clear of backlogged traffic.
Meanwhile, a broken-down truck has been blocking traffic on State Highway 1 near Johnsonville.
The truck broke down about 12.30am between the top of the Ngauranga Gorge and Johnsonville in the northbound lane.
It was initially blocking two lanes but had been moved to the side of the road, police said.
