Kapiti trains experienced delays of between 20 and 30 minutes and some services were cancelled after a points fault this afternoon.

KiwiRail spokeswoman Sophie Lee said points faults at Porirua, Paekakariki and Paraparaumu had caused significant delays on the Kapiti line between about 3pm and 8pm today.

Tweets from MetLink reported service was expected to return to normal by 8pm.

The disruption followed a morning of delays on the Hutt Valley and Kapiti lines, which saw reduced seating on a Taita to Wellington service and an express service turn all stops service due to an overhead power fault.
