Late trains are the bane of public transport users - but delays on the Johnsonville line today were caused by a crew who stopped to help an injured elderly woman.
The 4.19pm service from Wellington to Johnsonville was cancelled today after a series of delays.
However the cancellation was due to TranzMetro staff helping out with a medical emergency at the Johnsonville train station platform.
Kiwirail spokeswoman Sophie Lee said a train crew passing through Johnsonville at around 2pm had spotted a huddle of people at the station's platform.
They got off the stopped train to investigate and found an elderly woman who had injured herself on the platform.
The crew-members stopped briefly to call an ambulance for the woman and wait until it arrive, and the resulting delays had a "knock-on effect" resulting in the cancellation of the later train, she said.
The service missed its 4.19pm slot but the next alternative service left 13 minutes later.
