An elderly woman has died and an elderly man has been injured following a two-car crash in Horowhenua.

Police Central Communications Marc Clausen said the crash, on State Highway 1 near Gleeson Rd, south of Manakau, occurred just after 1pm today.

An 84 year-old female driver of a Toyota was killed, and an 80 year-old male driver from the other vehicle, a Mitsubishi 4WD, received minor injuries.

He was taken to Palmerston North Hospital as a precaution.

Mr Clausen said it appeared the Toyota crossed the centreline and collided head on with the Mitsubishi.

State Highway 1 is completely blocked and a diversion is in place through Manakau township.

Traffic was moving through the diversions, but travellers are warned to expect delays while the crash scene is cleared.

It is hoped to have the road open before 5pm.
