RE-ELECTED: Porirua Mayor Nick Leggett.

Porirua has re-elected mayor Nick Leggett, but his deputy Liz Kelly will be nervously awaiting the counting of special votes after losing in the Eastern ward by just nine votes.

Mr Leggett held the mayoralty with 9252 votes, while challengers Brian Collins and Yvonne Carroll garnered just 2882 votes between them.

The next step would be bedding down the new team and looking at how to continue the city's economic strategy, Mr Leggett said.

Harbour restoration and the city redevelopment were also key priorities.

The new-look council has seen Izzy Ford and former mayor John Burke join the lineup in the Eastern ward, but with Liz Kelly sitting only nine votes behind re-elected Denys Latham the special votes could see that change.

Only Ms Ford was voted in on the first round of voting, while Mr Latham was handed his seat on the 19th round.
