Despite a lucky three weeks, Anne and Bill Flipp were shocked to win a new car at the Trentham races on Saturday.

The Foxton couple won a new Toyota Yaris in the Great Toyota Giveaway, a promotion run by Horowhenua Mail's sister papers Hutt News and Upper Hutt Leader.

The win, drawn on Saturday at the Trentham Wellington Guineas Day, topped off a lucky three weeks for the couple, who are big racing fans.

Between them, they own syndicate shares in nine racehorses, including 5-year-old mare Amberio, who won the $50,000 Matamata Cup on October 13, and Southern Secret, who won the Tom Punch Memorial Maiden at Whanganui a week later.

The lucky streak continued when another of their horses, Zennista, placed second on Saturday, shortly before the final draw was made for the new Toyota Yaris.

The win was a team effort, Anne says.

"My husband picked up the forms and brought them over to me to fill out.

"It's overwhelming; we've just had a lucky three weeks.

"It's fabulous, we've had a great time."

It has been an "unbelievable dream" streak, says Bill.

The couple already own a Toyota ute, which is used for farm work, and the Yaris will be handy for shopping.

The promotion was a resounding success, Hutt News manager Grant Davidson says, attracting more than 55,000 entries.
