Armoured warriors, men in tights and wares for trade: Levin winds back the clock for Saturday's Ye Olde Manakau Medieval Market.

With about 200 craft and food stalls, as well as entertainment and activities, the market and its medieval theme is one of the region's most popular events, attracting up to 12,000 people.

Event co-ordinator Di Traynor said since the first market nearly 20 years ago, the annual fundraiser has donated about $230,000 to Horowhenua community groups.

"It was held at Manakau for the first 12 years, but it outgrew the village," she said.

"But it's always retained its great atmosphere."

Ms Traynor said activities and entertainment included children's paper sword battles, magic trick shows, tarot readings, maypole dancing, pillow jousting and "unicorn" rides.

"There will also be medieval warrior skirmishes, wandering troubadours and minstrels, wicked wenches, men in tights, morris dancers and good old-fashioned tug of war as part of the day's activities."

Among the wares will be alpaca wool garments, cloth books, handmade knives, fruit wine, port, mead and liqueurs, jewellery, leather crafts, old- fashioned sweets and wooden toys and puzzles.

Ms Traynor said the market will also see the return of the popular Medieval Idol talent quest.

"People can register on the day and if they have music they can bring it on a CD or memory stick - not very medieval, but it works well."

The Medieval Market is at the Levin Showgrounds "shire" this Saturday from 9am to 4pm. Entry is $5 for adults. Children accompanied by an adult are free.
