Hikoikoi Reserve and the River Trail looked resplendent in the Sunday morning sun, but it was hot for runners and walkers taking part in the 18th annual Hutt News 10K and 5K.

Despite the conditions, the turnout of a couple of hundred participants was down on past years.

Hutt Valley Harriers captain Tony McKone, whose club organised the event, says proceeds will help young runners get to the North Island Cross Country Championships later this year.

The event retains its family flavour, with several mum, dad and kids groups running or walking, and a number of people using the fun run as a chance to walk dogs or pushing prams in front of them.

James Coubrough blitzed the 10 kilometres in 34 minutes, 31 seconds while Daniel Charlton walked the distance in just under one hour and four minutes.

The teams cup was claimed by the Pertronic B team of Brent, Sarah and Josh Pells, with 18 workers from the electronics/fire alarm equipment specialist firm taking part.
