A calendar project featuring classic cars and glamour models has delivered a big bonus for Hutt Hospital's neonatal unit.
Mandi Lynn is an award-winning photographer based in Petone but previously worked as a lactation consultant for Hutt Valley District Health Board. She says she wanted to give back to the DHB for all her ''happy years'' there and harnessed the help of around 60 volunteers, including a project manager, graphic designer, pin-up models, make-up and hair artists, vintage car enthusiasts and even the NZ Fire Service.
Sales of the 2012 calendar have raised more than $8000, to go towards the purchase of two hospital grade breast pumps for the special care baby unit.
''Breast pumps were always a scarce commodity and [I] knew the ones the unit had were on their last legs.
''The pumps that we got are state of the art and will hopefully help to keep more prems [premature babies] able to have the best medicine available to them - their mother's milk.''
One of the big earthquakes struck Christchurch in the middle of shooting for the calendar so the printers, Format, donated a further 500 calendars. Calendars are still available from A La Mode Photographic Boutique or at Adzuki Bean Cafe in Petone, with all proceeds going to the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal.
To celebrate the arrival of the breast pumps, all the volunteers involved in the calendar project will be holding a party for parents of Hutt-delivered prem babies at 6pm on February 10 at the A La Mode Studios, 109 Jackson St. There will be champagne, strawberries, cupcakes, free makeovers for the mums, photoshoot prizes, burlesque dancing and a cruise of some of the vintage cars used in the calendar.
Mandi Lynn is also offering photoshoot prizes, complete with hair and make-up sessions. Mothers should register at www.lamode.co.nz to be in to win.
