There are fundamental reasons for the regression of the retail industry in the CBD that go beyond the surface. There is not only noteworthy For Sale and For Lease signs prevalent in High St but elsewhere like the small industrial support business zone in Petone.

Sadly, for the last 15 years the government of the day has pursued Free Trade agreements as opposed to Fair Trade or Bi-Lateral agreements. Only when people are in employment is there disposable income to support the retail industry. In the last few years the local tyre, biscuit, toothpaste, carpet and battery factories (to name a few) have closed their doors.

When an item is made locally money grows by 10 to 100 times in the community. When an item is imported money for the item leaves the country, contributing nothing to the local economy.

Interestingly, there is a For Lease sign at a National party office in High St that also has closed its doors - probably to avoid the stone throwing that will begin soon!
