Police have charged a woman for allegedly stealing garden gnomes and posing as a fundraiser for local schools.
Senior Sergeant Paula Holt says police received multiple reports during the last fortnight of a woman in her twenties door knocking and asking for donations.
"With a small child she's been going around houses in the Naenae, Stokes Valley, Taita and [other] Hutt Valley areas saying that she's collecting for school science trips. When people aren't there she's been stealing from people's yards."
Among the items she was alleged to have taken were garden hoses and lights, while at least two households had garden gnomes pinched.
"It's not normal practice for schools. If anybody comes to your door saying that they are collecting for a school trip, take the person's name and ring the school."
The woman now faces theft and fraud charges, Ms Holt says.
