Dogs could be banned from Petone Beach in Hutt City Council's latest review of its rules.

Animal control manager Les Dalton says the review is a legal requirement and the harbour front is an area of concern.

There are dog exercise areas at each end of the beach, but it is the stretch in between that is the source of problems.

Dogs are banned from the central part of the beach between 8am and 8pm during daylight savings, and at all other times dogs must be on a lead and under control.

Mr Dalton says some people park near the beach and let their dogs go swimming and running up and down the beach while they stay in the car. There is also a problem with owners not picking up their dogs' faeces.

Although it would not be popular, he says a total ban on the main part of the beach would have to be looked at.

Dogs would still have access to either end of the beach. He believes the two existing exercise areas are more than adequate.

The council has stepped up patrols on the beach and is using a volunteer warden to speak to owners and remind them of the rules.

There have been no serious attacks on the beach but he says uncontrolled dogs are an ongoing problem.

Any change to the rules will require public consultation.

The dog exercise area at the western end of the beach starts at the wharf and runs to the railway line. At the eastern end, it starts behind the food kiosk and runs to the Hutt River.
