Love and fitness will come together on Saturday for an event not usually seen at a gym - a wedding.
Les Mills Hutt City Club Manager Mid Thomas says she could not think of a better place to have her wedding than at the one place she loves to be at, with people she loves to be with and doing what she loves most.
She will marry fiance Peter Savelio at 3pm at the gym and anyone is welcome to attend the ceremony, as well as a concert and fitness classes leading up to it.
''I've had the 'you're kidding' followed by 'you're crazy' and general comments on how odd I am,'' says Thomas. ''But in reality I've had a love affair with Les Mills ever since I joined the Group Fitness world; it became my lifeline after a bleak childhood.''
Thomas said she was abused as a young girl by her step-father, and found refuge and love in fitness since she was 15.
''Without going into detail, if someone asked me to give a colour that described my childhood it would be grey with strong undertones of black.
''I found a family through fitness who didn't judge, who did care and who was always there for me unconditionally.
'' There may be others, like me, who would want to be involved with fitness too. Many start in a dark place wanting some kind of change in their life, and I hope through my story people realise how much fitness can change anyone's life,'' she said.
Les Mills Hutt City is opening its doors on Saturday and will be free for everyone to visit. The schedule includes: 9am, BODYPUMP with Amy Styles & Charlie Goodall; 10am: BODYATTACK with Mid Thomas, Amy Styles, Nathan Jones, Peter Fraser & Tane Waetford; 2pm: 'The Show' free concert by Handmade Records featuring Scribe; 3pm: The wedding ceremony.
