Mother and son mourned
Police have officially named the two people killed in Wednesday's crash south of Sanson as Margaret Jane Turnbull, 51, and her son, Trent Cole Whitburn, 20, both of Levin.
Acting Detective Sergeant Shelly Ross said the Nissan car the pair were travelling in and the Big Chill truck they were following on State Highway 1, south of Sanson have been ruled out as contributing factors to the crash.
Central House Movers, transporting a large catamaran that caused those two vehicles to go slow, was not involved in the crash and had the appropriate permits to make the trip from Palmerston North to Foxton, police said.
''The crash investigation is ongoing and there is still a lot of information to be sourced and reviewed before any conclusions can be drawn especially in relation to any potential criminal charges.''
Friends and family of Whitburn tragically killed in the fiery car crash on Wednesday are devastated at the loss of the young Levin father of one.
Whitburn, who knew the grief of losing his own father, was himself a father to baby Hohepa, who turned one in September last year.
Family, when spoken to by the Manawatu Standard, said they were not yet ready to comment.
An outpouring of tributes to the pair have been made on Facebook.
Laura Growcott: '' I still can't get my head around this... I miss my baby cousin so much. I'm waiting for him to walk in the door and say "Hey Cuz". Trent, you and your mum, Margaret will be missed by many. I will cherish the memories, I love you my cuz xxx''
Daphne Simmonds: Trent and Margaret R.I.P You were both a large part of our family and we will all remember you and the things we did together. Trinett , Izzy , Johna and Kelvin we are thinking of you , you are not alone. All our love also to Suede and wee Hohepa.
Youth Quest Kapati: It is truly a sad day when one of our YQ young men are gone before their time. Rest in peace Trent Whitburn. I remember you were up front, straight up and spoke your mind, not always saying things we want to hear, but, it was who you were. You loved your family and I bet you were the best dad to your son and best man to your partner. Arohanui to all of Trent's family and friends.
