Record bid to aid 'fish & chip' babies

Knitters young and old will get their needles flying for "fish'n'chip babies" this weekend.

Diana Kenny, of Titahi Bay, and her sister Philippa Annear have been knitting all their lives, and out of this passion has grown a desire to help the less fortunate.

The pair have organised a community knit-a-thon at Lower Hutt Town Hall on November 29 where knitters will make beanies and peggy squares for the Red Cross to be used at its discretion for whichever country is in need.

The idea came about when they learned of thousands of children born in South Africa, often to mothers with AIDS, who are taken home wrapped in newspaper because that is all there is to keep them warm. Hence the name "fish'n'chip babies".

"It's about getting people together, having fun and making a difference, like in the war days," Ms Kenny says.

In an attempt to set a new world record for the largest number of knitters together, she is calling for people from all around the region and, if you do not know how to knit, sewers are also welcome.
