The second annual Porirua Water Sports Open Day is being held on the Onepoto arm of Porirua Harbour this Saturday.

Overseen by Porirua City Council, there will be waka ama, canoes, sail boats and plenty of other water craft for anyone to try out.

"This is about promoting Porirua Harbour, health, leisure and recreation, and promoting the sporting groups themselves," says PCC sports development officer Faalogo Vaai.

"A lot of people in Porirua have never been on a boat, this is all about giving it a go."

Last year, despite bad weather, more than 300 people came down to the water and got on boats, paddleboards, inflatables and waka. Thirteen different water sports, supported by more than 20 clubs, will be present on the day.

All will have lifejackets and have been briefed on the rules of the harbour.

The event, which is free, kicks off at 8.30am and runs till 1pm.

If individuals or groups want to take part, please contact Faalogo Vaai on 027 286 1489 or fvaai@pcc.govt.nz. All members of the public are welcome from 8.30am.
