Up and comer: Martin McCrudden, of Whitby, on his way to 12th place in the Wellington round of the National Mountain Bike Cup elite men's race held at Mt Victoria last Sunday.

McCrudden was also second in the under-23 class, one minute 12 seconds behind Josh Parkin of Hamilton.

Dirk Peters, of Rotorua, won the elite men's race and Olympian Karen Hanlen, of Whakatane, overcame a horror first lap to win the women's race by more than three minutes.

First Wellington woman home was Samara Sheppard, of Churton Park, in third place, and fastest man was Tom Bradshaw, who was seventh.

Co-organiser Mark Renall said the event went brilliantly in hot, sunny conditions.

The riders loved the course.
