Two Hutt Valley brothers were rescued yesterday after their boat capsized just off the Kapiti Coast.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter arrived at the scene at 1.10pm, after receiving a report that two men were in the water about 100 meters from shore.

A surf life saving IRB arrived also at the scene.

The men - one in his 30s, the other in his 40s - were wearing life jackets. They were safetly picked up and taken to Wellington Hospital, where they were assessed before being released yesterday afternoon.

Life Flight crewman Dave Greenberg said he had no doubt that wearing life jackets played a big part in saving the men’s lives.

“Both men were floating on the surface quite comfortably waiting for rescue," he said.

“I’ve been to many rescues like this where the people drowned because they were not in life jackets.”
