A pizza delivery driver allegedly had his head repeatedly slammed into his car's steering wheel in an assault in Paraparaumu on Tuesday night.

Police allege a 42-year-old Kapiti man forced the pizza delivery driver off Kapiti Rd at about 9pm, after being overtaken seconds earlier.

Sergeant Sam Gilpin said the delivery driver, 18, was returning to work after making a delivery, following the accused at about 40kmh.

He pulled out to overtake, and was then tail-gated along the road, before the driver allegedly pulled up alongside and gradually forced him off the road, Mr Gilpin said.

''I don't think he has made physical contact, but he has forced him off the road. He has then got out of his car and approached the pizza delivery driver.

''He has punched him several times in the head area, and then took hold of the male's head, and smashed it into the steering wheel several times.''

The teenager suffered cuts to his forehead, requiring stitches, but was otherwise unharmed.

As the offender left the scene, the victim was able to get the license plate number of his car, which led police to the arrest.

A man was arrested by police on Tuesday night and charged with assault. He will appear in Porirua District Court on Tuesday
