Kirke Sawry and Hayley Fordyce impressed audiences last week starring as Tony and Maria in the Kapiti College production of West Side Story.

The cast performed to an audience of almost 1500 over the four nights.

More than 80 students were involved in the show as cast members, technical assistants, backstage helpers, costuming and more.

Kapiti College principal Tony Kane said the show was excellent, with a great combination of humour, tension and tragedy.

"The students handled some very challenging singing items with aplomb," he said.

The show was directed by Siobhan Malley, with former Kapiti head boy Matt Fraser as musical director, and choreography by dance teacher Leonie Orsborn.

It was Hayley and Kirke's first major drama experience, although both have been involved in barbershop groups.

Kirke said that although the preparation and rehearsals were busy, once the nerves of the first show were over he enjoyed the experience, connecting with a range of students from different year levels and backgrounds.
