For one day Wellingtonians experienced the delicious dishes of one the country's top chefs, Martin Bosley, for free.

Mr Bosley opened his restaurant, World, at Midland Park without prior warning and served lunch and dinner to those lucky enough to stumble upon the free meal.

Mr Bosley, pictured at left overseeing the work of his head chef Stephen Mahoney, said it was his way of giving back to Wellington for all the support the city has given him over the years.

"Financially, things are pretty tough out there, so I wanted to be able to give something back to the wider community in these hard times.

"Frankly, I want everyone and anyone to be able to experience my world first-hand.

"It just seemed like such a good idea; it's a bit guerilla, but it's bold, audacious and very, very Wellington," he said.

The outdoor restaurant in Midland Park opened at lunchtime from midday until 3pm, serving a three-course gourmet meal. It opened again from 5pm until 7pm for dinner.

Everything served was free of charge.

The menu included Cedar-Planked Salmon, Wasabi, Flying Fish Caviar, Citrus Butter Emulsion, Salad of Witloof, Walnut, Fennel and Slow-Cooked Pork Cheek, Young Carrots, Smoked Eel, Celeriac Puree, Reduced Braising Juices and Garlic Chips.

May be Martin Bosley would like to write a short column for the Wellingtonian to offer a few cooking tips.
