Wellington mayor Kerry Prendergast has softened her stance on not standing for re-election in October.

Last July Ms Prendergast said she had made a commitment to her family not to stand again and intended to honour it. However, this week she said she would decide in late January or early February whether to stand for a fourth term.

Ms Prendergast has been on the council since 1989 and served on Tawa Borough Council before that.

When she said she would not stand again, councillors Celia Wade-Brown and Andy Foster said they were likely to stand and, on their past election records, stood the best chance of winning the mayoralty.

Councillors Bryan Pepperell and Rob Goulden have also said they are likely to stand, as have publisher Jack Yan, sculptor Carl Gifford and vet Allan Probert.

The beauty of google, bwing able to find out what is happening when you type in your name !

I am standing for the Lambton Ward, I am 21, and I love Wellington City but see the huge potential for it to grow !

Yes it was great meeting you last year Jack and I noticed my friends have jumped on here and started supporting,

Bertrand, I was curious like yourself before meeting Jack, and very interested to know a bit more about him. I know a large handful of politicians and see the differences between the successful ones and the dull ones.

Let me say that I think Jack will be great for Mayor, because after meeting him he has a vision, and I think you really need to look at a lot of candidates to try and decipher clearly what their visions are.

Jack is young enough to get my vote, and old enough to get my mothers vote, he is a quick thinker, hard worker and able to communicate clearly to a large demographic.

I think the fact he is coming from a non council back round is a great asset to him, it means he is walking in with the enthusiasm and motivation, inspiration and drive to make Wellington a great City, as opposed to councillors standing because they have council experience, half of them lost their passion 6 years ago, they just sit comfortably on a salary given to them by people like you, and people like you me and the rest of us all deserve a little better I think !

I oftern say I like the idea of a two term limit for councilors, two terms and your gone, fresh blood continuosly running through the City, new ideas always emerging, getting rid and eliminating time servers that need to go. It also encourages councillors to work a lot harder for the time that they are in there.

I have meet most of the Wellington City Councillors, and bar a few of them I am really not impressed with the effort they put into their titles. If they were doing a great job then I would not stand, but I think there is huge room for improvement.

I'm supporting Jack more importantly thou because he has good intentions, he is a geuinely nice person, and he has a vision for Wellington. He also vows to keep his facebook page and other online blogs open so he can communicate directly with people.

Lets face it, half the time you can not get a reply from the Mayors PA at all.

Anyway to keep it short and sweet lol, thank you to everyone who is supporting me, and I hope that we have some more great potential candidates come forward in due course to get some great fresh new ideas into Wellington !

Bertrand, I’ve come in here for the first time tonight, so your second comment (I assume to me) is misdirected unless you are replying to this, and you’ve invented time travel.

Think a lack of council experience will hold a mayor back? You don’t know Jack.

What WCC needs is not groupthink and croneyism, but out-of-the-box inspiration. What “experience” has got us is where we are now: a capital playing catch-up. I reckon Mark Blumsky, a successful mayor with no council experience when elected, would agree.

When I think about my Dad, he had no experience of being a husband till he married my Mum. He had no experience of being a father till I came along. And he did really well. Why? Because he’s a decent bloke.

If your real concern is about whether politics will eat me up, don’t be. It’s far nastier in the fashion business and I’ve weathered that for 12 years!

To the other commenters, thank you for your encouragement. I am grateful. You’ll be happy to know that everything I’ve promised I’ve made plenty of headway on. None are pie-in-the-sky promises. You can expect this interaction—either online in the mainstream media, or on the city blog I envisage—that I would expect to have with you. Unlike my opponents, I realize it’s the 21st century.

Incidentally, I met Jevan last October and think he’s an intelligent and passionate guy who would be an asset to this city. He’s had a lot of contact with local politics and knows his stuff. It would be great to see him on Council.

Now, I have spotted the ‘until something better comes along’ in comment no. 4 and a similar theme in no. 1. I’m going to continue working to earn your trust fully. Ka kite anō.

Well there's one vote for the maintenance of élites and the same-again policies! Cheers for that!

Sometimes, it takes someone with fresh new ideas and ingenuity to help make Wellington big and great. Had Barack Obama stood longer in the US Senate he would not would not have been US President now. There are times that change is needed and hope is what everyone is looking for. So far I've seen Jack Yan's campaign promises and I like them.

The only people looking at this Jack is you and me and you sure will not get my vote. Try standing for Council first and get some experience. Cheers Bertrand

Jack Yan For Mayor   #4   04:01 am Jan 16 2010

Jack Yan for Mayor until something better comes along, the man could not do as bad a job as our current Mayor.

Vote out Iona Pannet from the Lambton Ward, put the deputy back in their again, good old bloke he is, Jevan who ?If he is young and fresh with ideas I would rather have him in there than as a youth representative than Hayley Wain, what a waste of 80k a year. Come on Sir Bob give us some potentials to vote for other than the nit wits we have time after time !

Pleeeeaaaassseee do not back Kerry or I will be unable to support you, Ian Fraser or Carmen on the other hand and I'll support you.

CHANGEandHOPE   #3   03:02 pm Jan 15 2010

I second that motion! Its time we got rid off élites or the same-again policies. Wellington needs a fresh change and new ideas added with some hope in as well. For that I think Jack Yan is a candidate wants to build Wellington for all Wellingtonians.

Here's a candidate that's focusing on real important issues like: Having free wireless in Wellington CBD, helping to create more jobs as unemployment has gone up 1½ per cent between 2008 and 2009, the issue of non-privatization of Wellington's water utility and finally a real transparent online e-petition that really works online so that our voices and comments can be heard. Also rather than just talk the talk, I believe in his environmental programme that anticipates, rather than follows, the trends.

What are the other candidates talking about? I have heard nothing on looking after the well being of Wellingtonians be it jobs or the environment. All I hear and see is $$$$ on this and that! Such a waste to public funds and not to mention, isn't the WCC funds on deficit? Are we going to have more rate increases now?

Bertrand Brown   #2   02:50 pm Jan 15 2010

A vote for Jack Yan will be a wasted vote but Kerry must go. Jack is a nice guy with no experience. A Mayor must have Council experience. The choice is obvious from past polls but you need to go back to 2004...
