The 20 best local songs from the past year have been named.

Wellington artists Jon Toogood and Julia Deans, Jess Chambers, Jesse Sheehan, and Nick Gaffaney and Aaron Tokona, have  have made the Australasian Perfoming Rights Association Silver Scroll 2012 long list of nominees.

The Silver Scroll Award, now in its 47th year is judged on the song's merit, rather than sales, and is widely regarded as New Zealand's most prestigious song writing award.

Association spokesman Anthony Healy said it was  privilege to celebrate the best music of 2012.

"The Silver Scroll is unique as it shines the light on songs that have or will indeed in the future make a difference. This year is no exception" he said.

A panel of anonymous association members select the nominees, and more than 8000 other members vote to choose the five finalists.

The five finalist will be named in August and the winner will be announced at a gala dinner in September .

Other prizes handed out will include awards for most performed works in New Zealand and overseas, the APRA Maioha Award, the SOUNZ Contemporary Award and an induction to the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame.
