Santa has swapped his sleigh for a helicopter on the New Zealand leg of his worldwide tour.

He arrived at last night's Newtown Carols at Government House in the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, much to the joy of adults and children alike.

More than 2500 people lapped up the old favourites at the annual Newtown event.

The 50-piece Royal New Zealand Air Force Band performed along with the Newtown Community Choir and opera tenor Ben Makisi.

It was the first time the annual carolling festivities have been held in the grounds of Government House, having been held in nearby Newtown Park in previous years.

Ticket sales from the event raised money for the Life Flight Trust and Ronald McDonald House. The amount raised is yet to be finalised.
