Two Upper Hutt businesses have been honoured in the Westpac Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards.

The Pet Centre, which opened its third branch in Upper Hutt this year, won the category for best retailer.

The Upper Hutt Cosmopolitan Club won the tourism and hospitality section, beating old rival the Petone Working Men's Club.

Several other local businesses also reached the finals.

Last week at Tuesday night's glittering dinner at Trentham Racecourse, Label & Litho from Lower Hutt was announced as the supreme winner before a record audience of 320 .

Earlier the same day the Sir Geoffrey Palmer- led independent panel on local government had released its recommendations for a Greater Wellington Council led by a lord mayor.

That night there were plenty of quips from proud Hutties, including from Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace who suggested that as an industry powerhouse, it was time to launch a Hutt Valley bid to take over the region.

Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce president Helen Down kicked off the evening by saying that the amalgamation of the Hutt and Upper Hutt chambers two years ago had gone very well.

The combined chamber now has more than 700 members.

Entries in the business awards jumped from 49 last year to 93 this year.
