Miss Hutt Valley 2012 is 19-year-old Kendell Baker.

She received her crown from 2011 Miss Hutt Valley, Rachel Mills, at a function at the Upper Hutt Cossie Club on Sunday night.

In a first for the pageant, the 15-year-old Sacred Heart College student Georgia Rider was crowned Miss Teen Hutt Valley.

Surprised but delighted: Miss Hutt Valley Kendell Baker.

Although the field of eight was small, the standard of Miss Hutt Valley entries was high with the formal dress section particularly impressive.

The standard question and answer session drew some interesting comments from the girls, and thankfully no one promised to try to save the world.

Asked what is the biggest issue facing young women, Natalie Roberts gave a precise answer.

"I feel a lot of young women are very self-conscious. They should just be happy in their own skin."

Kendell had clear ideas about why she likes the Hutt Valley.

"I personally spend a lot of time in the mall and it is the largest in Wellington, so there is a lot of things to do here."

Kendell says all the girls expected Miss Hutt News Gemma van Baarle to win. She was surprised when her name was read out.

The 19-year-old commerce student has taken a year off university to decide what she wants to do.

Her aim is to get into event management but in entering Miss Hutt Valley, she was following her dream of being Miss Universe.

Initially very nervous, she said that once she made her first entrance on the catwalk, she really enjoyed the evening.

She is now looking forward to the Miss New Zealand competition and plans to put in a lot of work to prepare herself.

An auction for Te Omanga Hospice raised $3106 with the keenest bidding being for an All Black jacket.

One entrant who made an impression with her bubbly personality was Selesitinai Alesana, who was sponsored by a Stokes Valley church.

Chief judge Robert Lahman noted the high standard and said it was pleasing to get Maori and Polynesian entries. He hoped there would be more next year.

The winners:

Kendell Baker (Miss Hutt Valley 2012, Best Gown, Miss Swimwear).

Georgia Rider (Miss Teen Hutt Valley, Miss Teen Beachwear).

Kelsey Odell (People's Choice, first runner-up Miss Hutt Valley).

Gemma Van Baarle (Miss Charity Queen, second runner-up Miss Hutt Valley).

Cindy Devitt (Miss Photogenic), Katie Rex (Miss Friendship).
