A top season in Upper Hutt football where the City club's top men and womens' teams earned promotion to the Central League has been nicely book-ended with the late double success of the junior 7th grade side.
The team, all just 7-year-olds, recently came out unbeaten and victorious at two regional tournaments - the only grade where the same club reps won both finals in the back-to- back tournaments.
Selected from players across the club's five 7th grade teams, the sides had limited training together before facing regional opposition at the tournaments.
The first, the Western Suburb's Cityfitness tournament at Endeavour Park, was won 5-4 against a strong Wests team which had played together all season.
The Upper Hutt team went through to the final unbeaten run of seven games in the single day tournament. Isa Prins, with 20 goals, won the "golden boot" award for most goals scored during the tournament.
Team members were Isa, Harrison Lamont, Grayson Dawson, Logan Forster, Louis Poland, Caelan O'Hagan and Jack Owen.
The second tournament was in Masterton and won after an exciting extra-time 6-2 result against the same strong Wests team faced at the first tournament.
The side at Masterton again featured Isa Prins, Harrison Lamont, Grayson Dawson and Caelan O'Hagan alongside Daniel Stewart, Jared Nicol and Benjamin Webber.
Upper Hutt City junior club captain Sean Adams coached the sides and was left very impressed by the professionalism, skill and hard work shown by the youngsters.
"With the quality of talent coming through the juniors like this, Upper Hutt football has a bright future," he says.
