Upper Hutt College's junior volleyball side were beaten finalists in the recent North Island Schools event at Wellington's ASB Sports Centre.

The year 9 and 10 team were runners-up to Tauranga Boys in the Division 2 boys' final in a competition involving more than 80 teams and 1000 players.

Upper Hutt went into the final unbeaten. The college's Jeff Paula Falefata earned selection in the overall tournament team.

In the opening pool play Upper Hutt defeated Gisborne (two games to nil), Long Bay College (2-0) and Spotswood (2-1). Albany Junior High was put away in the quarters (2-0) before a top semifinal against Palmerston North Boys' High.

Upper Hutt won the first game 25-23, gave up the second 19-25 and won the decider, 15-9. In the final Tauranga scored 25-21 and 25-15 to claim the title.
