To most New Zealanders, the name Bracewell is synonymous with cricket.

But to people in the Wairarapa, the name Doug Bracewell  encompasses just about every code, summer and winter.

And after a life dedicated to playing, coaching and promoting sport, Bracewell has finally got his just rewards, winning the 2009 New Zealand Recreation Association (NZRA) President's Award.

This award is given to one person in the recreation industry each year.

Chosen by NZRA president John Latimer, the recipient is someone who has made a significant contribution to the industry and community, inspires others and is an outstanding role model. Mr Latimer says Bracewell is a worthy recipient.

"He has made a huge contribution to the local Wairarapa community, particularly in his many coaching roles  particularly cricket and rugby.

"He has served on many community committees as a volunteer, and is unwavering in his enthusiasm and promotion of sport for the wellbeing."

Originally from Christchurch, Bracewell moved to the Wairarapa in the 1970s and, ever since, has been heavily involved in local sport and recreation.

He has worked in a variety of roles, from Masterton District Council horticulturist and groundsman to Masterton Recreation Centre recreation manager. Today, he is the sports development adviser and coaching co-ordinator for Sport Wellington-Wairarapa.

Coming from a family of successful athletes instilled a love of sport in Bracewell, but it is his commitment to education, to proactively encourage others to take up sport, and his role as a mentor that really made an impression.

He has worked in the sport and recreation field for more than 25 years but his love for his work means he does not see it as a job.

The award was presented during NZRA's annual conference gala dinner in Napier last week. Recreation professionals from around the country attended the conference, which focused on bridging the gaps between the recreation industry and others, like health, education and sport.

"Recreation is essential to our physical and mental health," says Brendon Ward, NZRA chief executive.

"We are lucky in New Zealand that we have access to fantastic outdoor parks and reserves.

"We have modern recreation facilities and a dedicated group of professionals who strive to deliver appealing, safe, appropriate and enjoyable recreational services.

"The awards are about thanking those people, and recognising those among them who raise the bar, develop innovative solutions and inspire New Zealanders to get active and healthy."
