A Nelson man allegedly abducted a 20-month-old baby today before fleeing in a stolen car, with the baby onboard, police say.
Officers allegedly chased the 27-year-old man after he fled a family violence incident at 1.30pm.
He was found on Main Road, Stoke, but failed to stop.
The pursuit was eventually called off but police found him later in the afternoon in a parked car in Nelson.
The man handed the baby over to police before leaving the scene. Police found him again at 4pm and used road spikes to stop the car.
A police spokeswoman would not say if the man was the father of the baby.
He will appear in Nelson District Court tomorrow facing abduction and assault charges.
Further charges are likely.
