An earthquake centred off the northeast coast of the South Island has been felt in Kaikoura.

The GeoNet website said the 4.3 magnitude quake, which struck at 7.36am, had a focal depth of 15km.

It was centred 30km east of Kaikoura and 90km south of Blenheim.
