A South Auckland woman, who was stabbed this morning, has died in Middlemore Hospital.

A St John spokesman said they were called to an incident at 11.26am involving a woman and were directed to another incident "further down the road" where they found a man dead.

It's understood the dead man stabbed the woman at a block of flats in Great South Rd, Takinini, before fleeing the scene.

His body was found a short time later.

Counties Manukau police were at the scene but have refused to comment.

The incident is believed to have happened in unit three of the apartment block, but police won't confirm that until the man's next of kin have been informed.

A neighbour in the apartment block said she heard a scream and within minutes police were at the scene.

"The cops told us someone got stabbed but that's all I know," she said. "They took someone away in an ambulance."

The neighbour said the couple who lived in the unit were quiet but enjoyed drinking.

Because of the man's death, the railway line between Homai and Papakura was closed at 12pm at the request of police but spokeswoman Stephanie Morison said the line was reopened at 2pm and normal services resumed later in the afternoon.
