A 27-year-old man is in hospital in a critical condition after a fight in the Wellington suburb of Wainuiomata overnight.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the assault which occurred just after midnight.

Police said two males became involved in a fight with another person in a blue four-door sedan outside the Caltex service station on The Strand.

"Two males exited the vehicle and began fighting with the other two males. After the incident the vehicle has fled the scene at high speed,'' police said.
