The father of a woman accused of killing her newborn baby allegedly had sex with her.

The 58-year-old man appeared on a charge of committing incest with his daughter when he appeared in Lower Hutt District Court yesterday. The offending allegedly happened in June this year, court documents show.

The 21-year-old daughter is accused of murdering her newborn baby on September 8. The dead infant, thought to be less than a day old, was found at the back of a property in Taita on September 10, wrapped in a towel.

The woman was charged with killing the baby on September 18 - five days after her father was charged with incest.

Police are still awaiting DNA results to confirm the identity of the baby's father.

Prosecutor Sergeant John Miller yesterday said police needed to interview the woman again about the allegations involving her father, but were not allowed to until a doctor confirmed her "state of mind".

It is understood further charges might be laid after the interview.

Judge Ian Mill suppressed the man's name and any details that might identify the woman and remanded him on bail to appear again next month.

Inspector Shane Cotter, head of the investigation into the baby's death, declined to comment yesterday while the case was before the courts.
