A 25-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly pointing a pistol at another man.

The incident happened in Mairehau Rd, near Marshland Rd, about 1.35pm today.

Acting Sergeant Darrell Strick said a man driving a van along Mairehau Rd had stopped and got into a "verbal exchange" with a man walking along the road.

"The male in the vehicle presented the pistol at the other male. He's then taken off. He was known to the other male, so we were able to find out an address for him," he said.

A cordon was set up around the alleged offender's house in Kilner St in Burwood, and armed police were sent to the scene.

Strick said an air pistol was found in the vehicle and the 25-year-old man was arrested shortly before 4pm.

The man will appear in the Christchurch District Court tomorrow charged with presenting a firearm.
