LATEST: Police are treating the discovery of a body in a burnt out car near Taupo this morning as unexplained.

The Fire Service was called to reports of smoke in an area of forest close to State Highway 1 between Taupo and
Tokoroa just before 10am.

Firefighters discovered the body in a burnt out car and called police.

The area, known as Ohakuri, was cordoned off and a scene examination was expected to take hours before the body would be removed for an autopsy, police spokeswoman Kim Perks said.

Police were working to identify the dead person and notify their family, she said.

''It too early to say whether the death is suspicious so the death is being treated as unexplained until more detail is known."
