FAMILY HISTORY: Dag Guest and Bernice Tainui with the De Havilland Mosquito, whose restoration at Ferrymead led to a precious find.

A Christchurch family has been reunited with a piece of their family history, thanks to an aeronautical society.

The Ferrymead Aeronautical Society was working on restoring a De Havilland Mosquito plane when one of its members obtained parts of an aircraft piloted by New Zealand flying officer John Perenara Morgan in World War II.

Morgan originally came from Christchurch and members of his family still live in the city. His plane crashed in 1945 near Swindon in England.

His sister Bernice Tainui was presented with his parachute harness release buckle on Saturday.

"We are elated that we can get these things back," said niece Ngaio Tuari. Her aunt had cried upon receiving the box. "It would have been the last thing that [my uncle] touched."

Four generations of the family were present when the buckle was given to Tainui.
