A man has been winched off a hill in Wairarapa after his quad bike slipped and rolled in the mud.

The accident last night left the 60-year-old with fractured ribs and suspected internal injuries.

A paramedic was sent on a Westpac Rescue Helicopter to help him and it took several hours for rescuers to get the man to safety.

"Patches of low cloud made reaching the area difficult for our pilot and the mud at the scene made it very difficult for the entire team on scene" said Life Flight crewman Dave Greenberg.

"The rescue itself took about 2.5 hours but it took well over 3 hours cleaning the inside of the helicopter".

The man was treated in the Emergency Department and admitted to hospital.

On Boxing Day a 16-year-old was killed in South Otago when he rode his quad bike over a cliff on a farm.
