The man charged with the murder of Upper Hut woman Mary Donnelly can now be named.

He is 28-year-old Kharn Tamaka of Upper Hutt.

Donnelly was found dead in her Ebdentown St flat by family members on August 30, last year.

Tamaka has had name suppression since he was arrested last year. Police opposed the continuation of name suppression in Lower Hutt District Court.

His lawyer Kevin Preston said there were no grounds to continue it.

Judge Peter Butler remanded Tamaka in custody until April for his next appearance.  Tamaka has not pleaded to the charge of murder.

Donnelly had an intellectual disability. She was living independently with support from her family and a caregiver.
