Police have released a photo of a man missing from the Taupo area as they have "genuine concerns" for his safety.

Leighton Kerry Grant, 35, left Taupo on Friday night but failed to arrive back as planned at 6pm on Saturday.

He was driving his mum's late model white Suzuki Vitara, registration FTN631, which was found Monday morning at Hallets Bay, just south of Hatepe.

While Taupo area commander Inspector Steve Bullock said it was inappropriate for him to discuss Grant's mental health in any detail, he did say there were concerns about how he'd react if approached directly.

"To err on the side of caution we are appealing for any members of the public who see him to report the sightings to police rather than trying to engage with him directly."

Anyone with any information on Grant's whereabouts, or who may have seen him in or around Hallets Bay, should call Taupo Police on 07 378 6060 as soon as possible.
