A three-year-old child has been taken to Middlemore Hospital after being struck in a hit and run in Otara, South Auckland, this morning.

A St John Ambulance spokesman said emergency services were called to the scene on Bairds Rd about 10am.

The child was transported to hospital in a serious condition.

Inspector Earl McIntosh said police didn't know how the accident happened or whether the car was speeding.

The driver involved was in a car described as a dark stationwagon or van, he said.
