Two English tourists were taken by rescue helicopter to Timaru Hospital in serious conditions after a head-on collision near Lake Pukaki yesterday.

The elderly couple's vehicle collided with a vehicle driven by a German tourist in his 20s.

Constable Joe Rush, of Twizel, said the crash happened at 3.30pm at Dover Pass, just before Haymans Rd.

The older driver had to be cut out of his vehicle and, along with his female passenger, was flown to Timaru Hospital suffering chest and neck injuries.

"The German man also had to be cut out and he was taken by ambulance to Timaru Hospital with minor leg and head injuries and appears to have been unconscious at some point."

Twizel St Johns and the Lake Tekapo and Twizel volunteer fire brigades also attended.

Inquiries were continuing, with charges likely to be laid, Mr Rush said.

Just before the accident a head-on collision was narrowly avoided after Tekapo police dealt with an Indian tourist driving on the wrong side of the road.

Senior Constable Brent Swanson said after several complaints from motorists in the Mackenzie Country the Indian man was observed by police driving into Tekapo on the wrong side of the road at 2.30pm.

"It could have easily been another head on."

He was charged with careless use of a car and forbidden to drive.

The same man was spoken to by police after driving on the wrong side of the road in Franz Josef on February 2.
