One of the worst high speed crashes seen in a long time - that's how emergency services have described a two car collision on the outskirts of Hamilton.

Two 18-year-old women are fighting for their lives in Waikato Hospital's intensive care unit following last night's crash while one man is in a serious condition and two other women are in a moderate condition.

Hamilton St John operations team manager Nigel Dawson said the it was of the worst accidents he had witnessed in a long time while Hamilton Police Senior Sergeant Dave Litton was told the scene was ''carnage''.

''It is always very serious when two cars meet head-on,'' Litton said. ''The road was blocked for a long time and we have a number of people in a very serious condition in Waikato Hospital.''

He said one vehicle was travelling to Raglan for a celebration when the crash happened on Whatawhata Rd, just west of the intersection with State Highway 39, just before 10pm.

''But I understand that vehicle was travelling on the correct side of the road.''

Firefighters took more than an hour to free a severely trapped woman from the wreck, while they spent 30 minutes working on a second extrication.

Crash investigators are expected to return to the scene today as they investigate the cause of the crash.
