The man who died after being hit early today by a truck and trailer near Rolleston, southwest of Christchurch, was an Australian soldier working with the NZ Army.

The NZ Defence Force said the man was not on duty when the accident happened. Next of kin had been informed but no further details were available.

Police said the man was walking along the highway when he was hit about 12.30am.
