A person has died in a road crash on State Highway 1, near Taupo.

The highway has been reduced to one lane around the crash scene, approximately 2 kilometres south of Hatepe, Taupo.

A police have begun investigating the cause of the crash.

Just one vehicle was involved and the person who died was its sole occupant.

No further details of the deceased or the circumstances of the crash will be released until the next of kin have been advised, police say.
