A train service was delayed on the Johnsonville line today after a piece of safety fence fell on to overhead lines and shorted them out.

The incident delayed the 1.02pm train from Wellington Railway Station, a Tranz Metro spokeswoman said.

The delay was not expected to be significant.

The piece of fence fell onto the lines from a work site on a hillside near Kaiwharawhara.

Tranz Metro planned to follow up with the owner of the safety fence to ensure there was no repeat of the incident.
