Witnesses watched as armed police pulled two men from a ute in Northland and arrested them in relation to an earlier firearms incident.

Police spokesman Nick Bohm said it was believed the two men had presented a gun to the owner of a Makara farm before fleeing the scene in a white Toyota Hilux.

At least five police cars were involved in a chase which ended on Northland's Pembroke Rd, where the ute was stopped and the occupants arrested about 6pm.

A witness said the men appeared to be in their late 20s or early 30s.
